Money Does Buy a Better Hide-a-Bed



Some products don’t offer much of a return for your money beyond a certain point; the sleeper sofa is definitely not one of those products. I think just about everyone has had the experience of getting an awful night’s sleep on futon or an old foldout couch/bed. You either can’t get to sleep, or if you do, when you wake up in the morning your back is aching, your neck is cramped, you feel more tired than when you went to sleep the previous night, etc. No, it’s not just you; it’s a very common experience. That’s why I think it’s important to let everyone who wants to listen know that there are simply better sleep sofas out there. In fact, if you’ve got a nice little budget going for yourself, you can probably find one that’s more comfortable than your current “normal” bed.

Companies like Crate & Barrel and the exquisite Carlyle Convertibles make super high-quality versions of the classic sleeper sofa. Crate & Barrel in particular will hook you up with something more affordable. They and many others have spent the last decade really expanding people’s perception of what a hide-a-bed can truly be.  If I were going to buy a new sleeper sofa today, I would aim high. I would resist the urge to save $150 by going with a lesser quality brand. Especially if I felt that it was likely this thing would be getting used more than a couple times a year, I would purchase something that promised and delivered more comfort. The benefit of this is that you will also get a couch that looks better, and will probably go with your surroundings in a lot more harmony.

 

One winner in this category is Crate & Barrel’s Willow Queen Sleeper Sofa. It will cost you a pretty penny (try $2,000), but if you have the money to spare this thing will really go a long way. It is a true upscale living room couch, the kind you can throw nice white pillows on and have wealthy guests over to sit on. It also has a very modern, sleek, and minimalist look. And it is comfortable. You know C&B won’t disappoint you. Now, this is just an example to give you an idea of what’s out there on the upper-end of the strata.

 

There are many great sleeper sofas that retail for less than the Queen. It is not the point of this article to make you wish for what you don’t have. But as I stated at the outset, if you cut yourself too short, it could make for a poor experience.
