How to Select the Right One For You
Selecting a sleeper sofa isn’t necessarily an easy process. There’s a ton of different makes and models on the market nowadays, so I thought I’d share a little of my wisdom on this topic.
First of all, as is usually the case, you’ve got to determine your budget. (I have written elsewhere about why I think spending a little more will go a long way, so I will not rehash that content here.) Think about things like how many times a year you expect that someone will actually be sleeping on this foldout. I don’t think I need to tell you that the more times it’ll be used for this purpose, the more you may want to invest in it. Of course all things are limited by present cash flow or at least credit limits. Although I’m sure you will have an easy time finding some furniture vendor more than eager to lend you however much you want; paying no interest until the end of the millennia or whatever they’re claiming now. Anyway, you also need to consider how the sleeper sofa plays in its non-rolled out form. Is it going in your living room or your basement? Are you highly self-conscious about the interior design of your home? These are the basic questions I would ask myself.

Next thing you’ve got to do is take measurements of the space the sleeper sofa is going to be inserted into. How many of us have forgotten this crucial step before going to the furniture warehouse! Ugh. Very frustrating. These items come anywhere from about 3 ½’ to over 8’ long. The smaller ones are not exactly sleeper sofas; they’re sleeper chairs. But maybe that is the only option you have. It certainly can still be quite useful in housing an extra guest or even just kicking your snoring husband out of bed for the night.
If possible you will want to try out the mattress before you buy a sleeper sofa. If you’re buying online you may want to read a couple reviews to get an idea of what people’s experience was with that particular brand’s model. Do what I do and use your intuition to try to tell if the reviewers are real people and if they’re telling the truth. Most people are, of course.
This is not the entire list of things you need to consider concerning sleeper sofas, but it’s a good start. Maybe we will cover more tips and tricks in another post.
